butch rovan

firefox-gray is a performer, composer, and media artist on the faculty of the Department of Music at Brown University, where he co-directs MEME (Multimedia & Electronic Music Experiments @ Brown) and the Ph.D. program in Computer Music and Multimedia. Rovan's work features custom-designed interactive systems for musical performance and visual media; his research includes new sensor hardware design and wireless microcontroller systems. Rovan frequently performs his own work, either with various new instrument designs or with augmented acoustic instruments. His research into gestural control and interactivity can be found most recently in the book "Mapping Landscapes for Performance as Research: Scholarly Acts and Creative Cartographies," (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009).

Currently I'm working on documentation for my installation "Let us imagine a straight line." Upcoming projects/events include:

  • Release on CDCM CD "Music @ MEME". In pre-production.
  • Continuing development of new "GLOBE" instrument -- some performances coming up.
